What Is an ESOP?
An ESOP is an employee benefit plan that gives participating employees ownership interest in the company in the form of shares of company stock. It’s a long-term wealth-building tool similar to a 401(k), with a main difference being that employees incur no out-of-pocket expense. Unlike a 401(k), where employees invest their own money via payroll, annual ESOP contributions are made to employees’ accounts by the company.
ESOPs often provide better returns than long-term retirement plans. Because all plan-eligible employees become shareholders, their efforts to improve company performance impact the business’s value – and that becomes a direct financial benefit.
